David Boyle Architect is a multi award winning practice established in 2002. The office was closed on 30 July 2023 after David's voluntary retirement. This website remains active as a record of the projects completed while registered as an Architect. David is not taking on new projects. Our studio located in Pretty Beach, adjacent to Bouddi National Park between Killcare and Wagstaffe on the Central Coast of NSW. The projects are located in Sydney and the Central Coast and we have also completed projects in rural NSW. We specialised in residential projects of all types, including new family and holiday homes and larger alteration and addition projects in city, suburban, heritage conservation, rural and bush-land settings. We have undertaken projects of most residential building types including detached homes, terraces, semi-detached houses, and Torrens title subdivision developments.

Our projects have received architectural and industry awards including the Hugh and Eva Buhrich Award in 2019 (The highest award for a house alterations and addition), 2 x national commendations, 9 x NSW state awards and 3 x commendations from the Australian Institute of Architects, 5 x commendations in Houses Magazine House of the Year National Awards, the Grand Prize and the Trans-Tasman (Australia and NZ) overall winner in the Australian Timber Design Awards, 4 x Dulux Colour Awards, The Marrickville Medal in 2015 and 3 commendations from Marrickville Council in recognition of the conservation of the Cultural Heritage of Marrickville, 1 award and 1 commendation from Waverly Council in the Waverly Design and Heritage Awards and the Abode house of the year award.

Our projects have been featured in leading Australian architectural magazines and popular publications and TV programs as well as architectural publications with international distribution, including Architecture Australia, Houses Magazine, Green Magazine, Inside Out, Home Beautiful, Monument Magazine, Breeze Magazine, SMH Domain, Grand Designs Australia TV, Better Homes and Gardens TV and Dream Gardens TV.

David Boyle Architect is an A+ member of the Australian Institute of Architects from 2002 before retiring as an architect and closing the business on 30 July 2023 and has been a strong advocate promoting architectural design in Australia. We have participated in housing and award winning building tours organised by the NSW Institute of Architects, the Architects Association of Australia (AAA) and the Historic Houses Trust and paqrticipated at the Venice Architectural Biennale.

    David is the sole director and leads the design and documentation for all projects within the practice.

    David graduated from the University of Newcastle in 1994 receiving the University Medal, the Board of Architect Prize and NSW Prize from the Australian Institute of Architects. He has been an Associate Lecturer at the University of Newcastle and Hunter Institute of TAFE and a guest critic and the University of Sydney.

    David established David Boyle Architect in 2002, closed 30 July 2023, after working with Sydney practices Candalepas Associates and Hassell. He has taught at several institutions including a year as Associate Lecturer in architecture at the University of Newcastle and the Hunter Institute of TAFE and has been a guest critic at the University of Sydney. David has given key note presentations at the Australian Institute of Architects National Conference and TalkTalk Speaker Series.

    The practice has been kept deliberately small to allow David to be involved in all projects across all stages. His unique projects have received numerous professional and industry awards and have been widely published. His carefully considered and often poetic work have a strong connection to landscape with a sensitivity to place and explore the opportunity to collaborate and celebrate craftsmanship and tectonic rigour in a domestic environment.

    David has taken voluntary retirment and is not renewing registration as an architect effective 30 July 2023

    David is also a ceramic artist and has been incorporating his ceramics into his architecture wherever possible.
